The Carphone Warehouse has appointed mobile-phone distributor BPI Telecom its logistics partner in Ireland in a deal valued ?25 million over three years. Under the terms of the contract, BPI will distribute stock to all 47 Carphone Warehouse stores throughout Ireland. It will also provide a reverse logistics service to manage phones returned by customers. Fergus Sweeney, BPI?s managing director, said the contract had further established the profile of the company as a leading distributor in the mobile and accessory market. Sweeney and his business partner Barry Napier established BPI in 2000 to distribute mobile phones in Ireland. The company is the official distributor for O2 in Ireland, and also has a distribution agreement with 22 Sony stores. According to its most recent accounts, BPI made a pre-tax profit of ?479,000 on a turnover of ?57.6 million in 2004. However, it is understood the company now has sales of more than ?93 million. The Carphone Warehouse opened its first Irish store on Grafton Street in Dublin ten years ago and now operates 47 stores in the country employing 350 people. Turnover at the firm?s Irish operations for the year ending April 2, 2005 was ?47.2 million, up from ?38.8 million for the year before. The company made a pretax loss of ?1.8 million for the year, compared with a loss of ?1.1 million for the previous year. It had retained losses of ?8.5 million at the end of the year, according to its accounts. However, much of this is attributable to the start-up costs associated with opening new outlets.
